In the wake of the major roster overhaul of the Toronto Maple Leafs that took place earlier this afternoon, we have decided to postpone Episode 5.20 of the program until Monday night.

In two separate transactions, the Maple Leafs brought in four new players while saying goodbye to six players from the current roster. In one trade, goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere was acquired from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Vesa Toskala and Jason Blake. In a second trade, defenseman Dion Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom and prospect defenseman Keith Aulie were acquired from the Calgary Flames in exchange for Matt Stajan, Ian White, Niklas Hagman and Jamal Mayers.

As a podcast, our medium’s strength is not in the breaking of the news – major news networks obviously hold an edge on us in that department – but in the accuracy of the information we present and the strength of our opinions once all of the chips have fallen into place. Having planned to record the show at 11am on Sunday morning, it would have been counterproductive to proceed while so much was still uncertain.

As a result, we will record Episode 5.20 late on Monday night for release on Tuesday morning with full details on both transactions as well as our opinions on who won the respective deals, what drove them and where it leaves the Maple Leafs going forward. Until then, we welcome and encourage your opinions on these two blockbuster deals!

We are pleased to announce that St. Michael's Buzzers forward #14 Reilly Smith, who appeared on Episode 4.36 of the program, has been selected by the Dallas Stars in the third round, 69th overall at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Smith's selection marks the third year in a row in which AFITC has had a prospect on the show prior to the NHL Entry Draft that has gone on to be selected.

In 2007, Reilly's brother Brendan Smith appeared on Episode 2.41 and went on to be selected in the first round, 27th overall by the Detroit Red Wings at the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. In 2008, Brandon Burlon appeared on Episode 3.38 and Nick D'Agostino appeared on Episode 3.37, both of whom were selected at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft: Burlon in the second round, 52nd overall to the New Jersey Devils and D'Agostino in the seventh round, 210th overall to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

As the Stanley Cup Finals heat up after Pittsburgh jumped back into the series with a crucial game three victory, so too is AFITC with a great lineup of guests who will join us on the program over the next two weeks.

#88 Justin Hodgman, a forward with the Fort Wayne Komets of the International Hockey League, scored the championship winning goal in triple overtime of game seven of the IHL finals, capping an impressive comeback in which the Komets rebounded from a three games to one deficit against the Port Huron Icehawks to capture the Turner Cup.

Prior to joining the Komets late in the 2007-2008 season, Hodgman skated with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League, leading the Otters in regular season scoring.

During the interview, Hodgman explains what it was like on the Komets' bench as the game stretched into multiple overtimes, how he was able to find such success so quickly in the IHL and lets us know if Steven Stamkos is the real deal and worth all the hype after having played with him and against several times throughout the OHL season. Hear the answers to those questions and many more in On The Bubble on Episode 3.39 to be released in the morning of June 2nd, 2008.

Episode 3.40 of AFITC will be released on June 9th, 2008 and feature the return of #14 Matt Stajan of the Toronto Maple Leafs to the program. Stajan, who appeared on AFITC during Season Two on Episode 2.37, had a strong season with the Maple Leafs while emerging as one of the club’s leaders during a tumultuous campaign.

By the end of the season, several media pundits were lauding Stajan’s leadership as the stuff of a potential captain. We’ll ask Matt about that along with what caused last season to go awry, how much of a distraction the numerous off ice issues surrounding the Maple Leafs proved to be, his thoughts heading into next year and much more.

Michael Landsberg, host of TSN’s “Off The Record, will join us this week on Episode 3.21 of AFITC to discuss the fallout in the wake of John Ferguson Jr.’s dismissal as Maple Leafs general manager on January 22nd.

We ask Michael if Cliff Fletcher is the right man to lead the Maple Leafs back to respectability, if Ferguson’s dismissal was handled properly by Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, if Richard Peddie should be involved in the search for a permanent replacement to Ferguson and why the Maple Leafs lack toughness on the ice among many other questions.

At the end of our final show of Season Two, Episode 2.44, we asked our tremendous group of listeners to stick with us over our summer hiatus as season three would be underway in no time. Well we were not kidding! Here we sit with the month of August winding down and staring us right in the face is Episode 3.1 of AFITC, expected to be released sometime within the first ten days of September.

Jeff is currently on the other side of the world getting acquainted with things Italian but we are nevertheless planning a number of things to help kick start Season Three of the program. This past week, we managed to secure two fantastic guests who will appear on the program in the early part of September. We are also working on several other initiatives to bring new excitement to the show, and perhaps the show itself to where it has not been before!

AFITC Insiders on Facebook have the first crack at finding out who will be joining us to preview the Maple Leafs upcoming season and look back at how the off-season has proceeded thus far. If you are an AFITC Insider on Facebook, log on and check it out. If not, the time has come for you to get involved! We appreciate every new person joining the group as its membership continues to grow thanks to all your support!

Of course, there is much to be discussed on Episode 3.1 of the program. Topics will include the impending legal issues new Maple Leaf Mark Bell is facing at the conclusion of this coming season and the destination of Peter Forsberg (we hear Ottawa is interested and Bryan Murray sees no reason as to why the Senators should not have as good a chance as anyone to land the Swedish sniper...in the immortal words of George Costanza, “It’s not a lie, if you believe it).

Two years probation for Rick Tocchet and his role in an illegal gambling ring, think back…remember Operation Slapshot.

The demand for ex-Maple Leafs has been off the charts this off season except if your name is Ed Belfour, Curtis Joseph, JS Aubin, Jason Allison, Bryan Berard, Danny Markov, Travis Green, Jeff O’Neill, Mike Peca and Eric Lindros…alright well, maybe not; perhaps that says all you need to know about the Leafs’ recent past.

Incidentally, the career of Luke Richardson continues this season in Ottawa. He must have reached the year where his birthdays start counting down instead of up. If that is not the case and he is, in fact, two years older, not two years younger than when he last played for the Leafs, I’d like Bryan Murray to answer this simple question…why?

Several Maple Leafs have commenced informal workouts in advance of training camp at the team’s training complex in the quiet, cozy hamlet of Etobicoke, Ontario. Matt Stajan, Darcy Tucker, Carlo Colaiacovo, Hal Gil, Nik Antropov, Alexei Ponikarovsky, Jay Harrison and Andrew Raycroft are among those getting jump starts to the season.

Speaking of Raycroft, he has said he is looking forward to the competition between himself and Vesa Toskala and that sharing the workload will be a good thing in the long run. See this comment comes at a time when Raycroft still thinks he has as good a shot as Toskala to start the season as the Leafs’ number one netminder…wait until the end of October when he has not seen the ice in three weeks.

Get your emails into Afootinthecrease@gmail.com in advance of Episode 3.1 of the program and let us know what you think on all those aforementioned storylines, the off season or anything else you care to share with us from the world of hockey. We will feature every single one of them on the show!

Brendan Smith moved up forty one places from his original ranking of 68th overall to be taken by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round as the 27th overall selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Committed to the University of Wisconsin Badgers for next season, Smith will develop under Head Coach Mike Eaves who led the team to the NCAA Championship in 2005-2006.

Clearly in the Detroit Red Wings, Brendan goes to a tremendous organization with a winning tradition and a team that prides themselves on shrewd picks at the NHL Entry Draft. No doubt Ken Holland and the rest of the Red Wings staff have made another one in Brendan Smith. Congratulations Brendan!!!

Happy Victoria Day weekend to all our Canadian listeners! For those listeners who are Canadian, they will know why Episode 2.37 will be a day later this week. For listeners outside of Canada, because of the long weekend, Jeff and I will release Episode 2.37 in the evening of Monday May 21st, 2007.

As our olive branch for a day's tardiness, we will include an interview with number 14 of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Matt Stajan. We caught up with Matt earlier this week and asked him about his thoughts on the Ottawa Senators, his off-season training program, the affect the lockout year had on his game and much more! Do not miss this independent hockey podcast first (or at least the ones we know about)!

Thursday night was a critical night for the Maple Leafs despite not being in action. Carolina, Montreal and the New York Islanders, all teams within a point of the Maple Leafs in the standings, took to the ice last night and produced victories beating Washington, Boston and Pittsburgh, respectively. As a result, all three teams usurped the Maple Leafs in the standings dropping them back down to eleventh place in the Eastern Conference. Now two points back of the final playoff position, the Leafs could jump back into a tie for eighth place tomorrow evening when they take on the Buffalo Sabres at the HSBC Arena.

While more inconvenient than detrimental, what Thursday's results did do for the Maple Leafs was increase the importance even more of their upcoming three games: a home and home series against the Sabres and a critical head to head match up with Hurricanes on Tuesday. These next three games will likely decide the Leafs playoff fate this season. Losing two of three could leave the Leafs in too deep a hole to climb out of with only six games remaining after the Hurricanes game. A successful result and the Leaf playoff push continues. These next five days will be the defining moment of the 06-07 campaign for Paul Maurice's boys.

Looking ahead to tomorrow's Leafs vs Sabres contest, look for all star defenseman Tomas Kaberle to make his return to the Leaf lineup after missing eight games with a concussion. He has received medical clearance and took part in his first full practice since the injury Thursday morning. Expect defenseman Andy Wozniewski to sit out in his place as he is still suffering from the affects of the flu.

Paul Maurice had hoped to practice the power play with all five members of the top unit now healthy at the same time for the first time since mid December but Kyle Wellwood threw a wrench into that plan when he left the ice after just five minutes had passed. He left the ice with tightness in his abdominal area but following treatment Wellwood reported improvement and expects to be in the lineup tomorrow.

Episode 2.29 of the program will be released late on Sunday night and will feature an interview with James Duthie, the host of the NHL on TSN, as he makes his second appearance on AFITC this season. He will offer his thoughts on the Leafs playoff hopes, the Senators chance of finally making some noise when it counts, the sudden rash of injuries suffered during fights and a whole lot more.

Hey guys, it's Jeff checking in from Sarasota, Florida where I'm currently sitting outside (the weather's great) hooking on to a weak open wifi connection. Not the internet access I was planning on having! As a result it looks like tomorrow's episode is most likely going to be delayed until hopefully Monday when I should have some sort of better system worked out. We'll keep you posted.

James Duthie, the host of the NHL on TSN, was kind enough to agree to join us on this week's show (Episode 2.10) to discuss a host of issues from around the league. We will get his opinion on the composite stick issue, retribution on clean hits, the Senators' tailspin, how the Leafs will cope in the absence of Mats Sundin (out 3-4 weeks with torn elbow ligament), and much more. Over the last few weeks and episodes we have experienced a sharp downturn in our audience. Some of our listeners have reported problems downloading our show in this time and it has led us to question whether these downloading problems are widespread and if they are turning listeners away from our show. Thus far we have been unable to find any evidence of widespread issues that could explain this much of a decline in our audience. Below is a graph of our audience decline. It seems highly unusual that the nice upward trend we had would suddenly stop and then drop dramatically without some sort of external factor affecting it. Audience Graph

Today Boing Boing is reporting that Rogers and Shaw Cable ISP services are causing widespread problems with podcast downloading through iTunes, downloads from the iTunes Music Store in general, BitTorrent and other P2P activity. This is clearly the problem we have experienced personally and have had reported to us by other listeners. It stands to reason that a podcast about hockey in Toronto would have a large portion of listeners using Rogers as an ISP.

This policy instituted by these ISPs is offensive to its customers and furthermore it is damaging the hard work of podcasters and other creators of legal online content. It is absolutely ridiculous that Rogers and Shaw are trying to pull of this kind of policy. What is even worse is that they are not even acknowledging that this filtering of traffic is taking place when customers report the problem.

We ask our listeners to be patient, and if you are experiencing this problem try downloading the MP3 directly from the site.

Since the publication of Episode 12 last Friday we have been experiencing widespread problems with downloads of the podcast failing from within iTunes. We apologize for these problems and ask that our listeners be patient with us until we can resolve this issue.

We're still trying to figure out exactly what is causing this problem, so if anyone is having trouble downloading, it would be appreciated if you could send us an email outlining the problem you're having.

This is just a quick post to tell anyone who is unfamiliar with podcasting how to subscribe to our podcast.

Probably the easiest way is to subscribe with iTunes. We are now in the iTunes podcast directory in the iTunes Music Store. To access this, click here. This link will open iTunes if you have it installed on your computer and take you directly to our page.

If you don't have iTunes you can subscribe from Odeo or subscribe to our RSS feed in any podcatcher such as iPodder.

The advantage to these methods is that they will automatically download new episodes to your computer as they are available. However, if you don't want to subscribe in any of those ways, you can directly download the mp3s of each show directly from the website.
